During the past 25 years, I have had the great pleasure to travel to 30 countries, providing 150 lectures, workshops, and presentations on topics ranging from pediatric balance assessment to our main focus of vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT). During this time The American Institute of Balance has become a well-respected global leader in clinical protocols, education, and research. The Institute has trained over 13,000 professionals from around the world. With a database of more than 150,000 patients, we have had the opportunity to develop gold standard evidence-based protocols, which we are pleased to say are used worldwide. Our dozens of research articles and textbook chapters appear as references for leading authorities in numerous specialties.

This is an Online Certificate and is intended only for those professionals living and practicing outside the United States of America.

This comprehensive Online Certificate Program was developed in response to the growing need to reach the millions of children and adults around the world who are in need of rehabilitation from vestibular and balance disorders.

Description of Certificate Program

This is the most comprehensive Online Vestibular Rehabilitation Certificate Program of its kind. It is the same content as the well-respected AIB live Vestibular Rehabilitation Certification Workshop, which has been attended by thousands of professionals from around the world. At the end of the course, there will be a satisfactory score of 76% or better is required. For your records, the certificate may be printed from your personal computer. It includes:

Faculty

Richard Gans, PhD
Richard E. Gans, PhD

Founder and Executive Director of The American Institute of Balance, one of the largest balance centers in the USA Dr. Gans received his PhD from The Ohio State University in Auditory-Vestibular Physiology. For over 20 years has been a leader in the development of vestibular evaluation and rehabilitation techniques, including tests of oscillopsia and postural stability as well as BPPV treatment. He has presented or published over 150 programs and papers worldwide in the area of equilibrium disorders. He is the author of 8 textbook chapters and texts ranging from diagnostic vestibular testing, vestibular rehabilitation, BPPV treatments and pediatric vestibular evaluation. Thieme Medical Publishers will publish his upcoming textbook, Evaluation and Management of Balance Disorders in Children and Adults. His most current research is in the areas of pediatrics, migraine and psychiatric aspects of dizziness. Dr. Gans served as the President of the American Academy of Audiology (2004-2005) and continues to be active in professional and governmental issues. He is an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University and the University of South Florida.

Kim Rutherford, PT, DSc, COMT

Dr. Rutherford obtained her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy (MPT) from the University of Missouri and her Doctorate of Science (DSc) in Physical Therapy from Texas Tech University. Her post-graduate doctoral work included an emphasis in education, with a specialization in orthopedic rehabilitation and a certification in orthopedic manipulative therapy (COMT). Dr. Rutherford has worked in a variety of clinical settings managing sports medicine, orthopedic, and neurological patients, in addition to administrative and academic roles.

Dr. Rutherford joins us as the Vice President of Education and Professional Services. Her role includes the evaluation, development, and management of AIB education programs. Dr. Rutherford collaborates with private, corporate, and academic organizations to deliver the most current and scientifically robust clinical information through workshops, online education, and corporate training programs.

In addition to her role in education, Dr. Rutherford plays an integral part in the Partner in Balance Program. She is involved in strategic planning and practice development for clinics/businesses looking to build or expand vestibular and balance services.

Joseph Sakumura, AuD, Board Certified, CCC-A

Dr. Joseph Sakumura, received the Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center and his undergraduate from the University of Kansas. Dr. Sakumura completed his residency training here at the American Institute of Balance. He holds the Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC-A) from The American Speech Language Hearing Association and is Board eligible from the American Board of Audiology.

Dr. Sakumura’s primary interests are in the diagnosis and rehabilitation of balance disorders in a broad range of patients, children to adults. In addition to being clinical staff, Dr. Sakumura is also a faculty member with the Institute and assists our Partners in Balance affiliates with practice development and in the application of new and emerging technologies.

Jackie Cuellar, AuD

Audiologist from Colombia and former President of the COLOMBIAN SPEECH AND LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION. Adjunct university professor and researcher of audiology programs. Scientific Director of Eco Audio Clinic in Bogota, Colombia. Active AIB Certification and International Faculty Member.

Carmen Romero, AuD
Carmen Romero Mulino, AuD, CCCA, ABA

Dr. Romero Mulino received her Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) from Pacific University and her undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida. She completed her residency training at the American Institute of Balance and was an intern at Mass Eye and Ear and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC-A) from the American Speech Language Hearing Association, is Board certified from the American Board of Audiology, and is member of the American Academy of Audiology and Academy of Doctors of Audiology.

Dr. Romero Mulino is clinical and conversationally proficient in Spanish. Her primary interest includes diagnosis and rehabilitation of balance disorders throughout the lifespan.


Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the Certificate Program, attendees will be able to…

  • Describe peripheral and central vestibular anatomy and physiology.
  • Explain the concept of central compensation and those factors affecting its
  • Name the most common otologic and non-otologic conditions which may cause dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance.
  • Demonstrate the most sensitive bedside/clinical evaluation protocols which identify candidates for treatment and proper triage.
  • Select the appropriate Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers for all forms of BPPV.
  • Describe the relationship of the cervical spine in the management of the “dizzy” patient.
  • Perform diagnosis-based adaptation-habituation and substitution VRT protocols and outcome measures.

Tuition Cost

Your tuition will range from $150 to $400 USD based on the country you reside in and recommendations provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).  Our goal is to make the Certificate Program available to all appropriate healthcare professionals without the barriers of cost.

Who Should Register?

The world does not have one sole profession identified to evaluate and treat (non-medically) individuals with equilibrium disorders. Each country may have numerous and varied healthcare providers who fill this role. Therefore, in recognition of this variation, the minimum requirement, is at least an earned bachelor’s degree or professional certificate in one of the following specialties:
