Executive Functioning, Muscle Power and Reactive Balance Are Major Contributors to Gait Adaptability in People with Parkinson’s Disease
Caetano et al (Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience 11, 11 (2019)) profiled the disease burdens of 54 patients with Parkinson’s disease, and subsequently characterized their gait under adverse walking conditions. Patients’ poor performance in measures of gait adaptability were attributable to a diverse set of factors, including weak hip abduction, impaired executive inhibition, and even fear of falling. This disease presents a multi-factorial threat to patient mobility, and therefore demands comprehensive intervention strategies, like vestibular rehabilitation therapy.
