Pediatric Vestibular Screenings Conducted Throughout Guatemala

Dr. Paty Castellanos, of Guatemala City, Guatemala, one of Central America’s foremost audiologists, recently conducted pediatric vestibular screenings on 700+ hearing impaired children throughout Guatemala.  The children, previously identified, were being seen at McDonald’s restaurants for their hearing aid fittings as part of an ongoing philanthropic initiative performed by Dr. Castellanos and her colleagues.  Dr. Castellanos in collaboration with Dr. Richard Gans of AIB, who designed the study utilizing the Gans Sensory Organization Performance Test, will be reporting their findings in a major publication early next year.  Felicidades, Dra. Castellanos!


Dr. Gans in Guatemala

Dr. Gans made several presentations at leading Guatemala City hospitals and spent several days consulting and seeing patients with Dr.Michel Nuyens and Dra. Patricia Castellanos de Munoz at the distinguished Diagnostico Vestibular Clinic, the AIB Affiliate in Guatemala.

Dr. Gans and AIB faculty are pleased to welcome Mario Villegas-Gonzalez, M.D., Ph.D., from Monterrey, Mexico and Enrique Munoz, M.D. from Costa Rica. Both physicians are participating in the Institute’s 3-day Vestibular Rehabilitation Workshop. Dr. Villegas is also collaborating with Dr. Gans on an ENT resident training program at University of Nuevo Leon Medical School in Monterrey.

Dr. Gans Teaches at Nova Southeastern University

Dr. Gans is pictured with the second year Doctor of Audiology class during their vestibular course.  They received clinical and hands-on experience with diagnostic and treatment protocols.

Charles Berlin, Ph.D. Joins AIB Staff

Dr. Berlin, world renowned researcher and clinician, professor emeritus Louisiana State University Kresge Laboratory has recently joined AIB’s clinical staff.  Dr. Berlin is one of AIBs education foundation faculty and will now be seeing patients at AIB’s Largo main campus.  Dr. Berlin’s expertise in hearing science, auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony with children and adults will assist this underserved population.

New 4th Year Au.D. Resident at AIB

AIB staff welcomes Yun Jin Mary Kim. Mary is from Salus University and will spend her 4th year at AIB specializing in vestibular and equilibrium evaluation and treatment. Mary is AIB’s 14th Audiology resident. Pictured at far right is Patrick Dolon of Nova Southeastern University, who is #13 and soon to graduate.  Soon to be Dr. Dolon will be joining AIB’s clinical staff.

AIB Doctors have just returned from San Diego where they presented at the American Academy of Audiology meeting. Dr. Gans presented on pediatric vestibular topics and vestibular rehabilitation; and Dr. Tarver presented a number of very interesting case studies with Dr. Richard Roberts in a Featured Session presentation.  Dr. Gans’s and Dr. Tarver’s presentations were both very well attended and received.

April Vestibular Rehabilitation Workshop

Physical and Occupational Therapists from around the country attended AIB’s Vestibular Rehabilitation Workshop.  AIB’s 7 workshops are designed for therapists, physicians and audiologists wishing to learn in small, hands-on learning modules.  Dr. Gans works with students in demonstrating the rehabilitation protocols from his book Vestibular Rehabilitation: Protocols and Programs.

Students meet with Dr. Gans at Audiology Unplugged

At the Audiology Now conference in San Diego, Au.D. student from Wichita State University meets with Dr. Gans at the Audiology Unplugged Session.  This is an annual event where students are able to meet leaders in the profession.
